Please note that dogs may “detox” when they first start a raw food diet.
After dogs are switched to a raw food diet, they go through a detoxification process. The detox will happen through the bowel and skin. You might notice that a dog is shedding a lot of hair. This is completely normal; dogs shed out their old and dull hair and begin growing a shiny and soft coat. You might also see a lot of earwax being produced from the ear. And some detoxing pets will pass blobs of mucus in their stools. They can also get a diarrhea.
Sometimes changing an animal’s diet too quickly can result in a diarrhea. Most vets erroneously blame all cases of diarrhea on the bacteria in the raw food versus the sudden dietary change, causing the owner to panic unnecessarily. Some dogs can also have issues if raw food is added to dry food for a meal; there can be digestive confusion, which can result in gassiness and belching. To avoid any digestive confusion, when introducing raw food to a pet with a healthy gut, it´s recommended to use the new food as a treat for a couple of days and keeping an eye on the stool. Start increasing the number of raw food treats over the next several days and continue to watch the stool. If the stool remains more or less normal, replace one meal of old food with a raw food. Do this for several more days, and if the stools remain normal, it’s safe to discontinue the old food and feed only with raw food.
However, if the dog has a sensitive stomach, irritable bowel syndrome, intestinal disturbances, or gut inflammation – conditions that plague most of the pet population – the transition will take more time, but it is certainly worth the effort.
Eventually, all the symptoms of detoxification will pass on their own. They are nothing to worry about, but they are something you should anticipate or it might freak you out!
Also, please note that pets on a raw food diet consume far less water than pets eating an entirely processed diet.
The most important thing in transitioning to raw food diet is to understand that it takes a lot of work and a lot of effort, but in the end is definitely worth it! There is NO straight recipe, you have to use your head and common sense when you begin a raw food diet!
